Newly built or recently rehabilitated tennis courts should last for many years; however, some playing surfaces are cosmetically damaged or structurally impacted by the effects of aggregate contamination. Caused by pyrite (iron particle) contamination of the aggregate in asphalt concrete pavement, these cosmetically undesireable spots and streaks on the playing surface detract from the beauty of courts so affected, even becoming a distraction to players, and are sometimes capable of causing localized surface failures.

Rehabilitation Examples
Sandy Brook Park, Township of Freehold, New Jersey.
These tennis courts at Sandy Brook Park were unusable and unsafe due to the aging and cracking of the asphalt leveling course. It was determined that pulverization of the existing pavement and its reuse as an aggregate base course would be the most economical approach to the court rehabilitation. After the courts were rehabilitated, their use has increased to the point where players must wait for a court on the weekends.
Mason's Mill Park
Mason's Mill Park Upper Moreland Township Pennsylvania. Numerous crack repair procedures had been tried on these courts without success. The governing body decided to rehabilitate all courts necessitating careful evaluation of existing conditions and assets. The court rehabilitation methods were selected and the courts were all rehabilitated in one season and usage of the courts increased.
West Chester University
Twelve tennis courts were constructed in 1976 with the WESCO emulsified asphalt leveling course system of construction. The courts endured well for approx. 20 years when the University decided to rehabilitate the courts and redesign the lighting system to improve player safety. Drainage was added and the slope increased to improve the drainage.
The Waverly South Beach, Florida
nother successfully completed rehabilitation of the damaged rooftop court at the Waverly, a luxury condominium complex in the “chic” South Beach section of Miami Beach. Although only recently constructed using conventional techniques, the tennis surface had failed and could no longer be used for regular play. Global was engaged to survey the damaged court and to develop a surface specification that would solve the surface buckling and erosion problems as well as provide a deluxe, cushioned playing surface for the condominium owners.
